Facing ecological and social challenges, a fundamental transformation of the economic system is needed. However, today’s economics is not equipped to support such a transformation.
Both economics teaching and research at universities, as well as economics education in public schools, are overwhelmingly based on a single paradigm: Neoclassical Economics. Other paradigms exist, but they are pushed into the margins. This lack of plurality in higher and general education prevents critical engagement with economics content and results in a research culture that is resistant to critique.
For our society, this lack of plurality means that our economic imagination is confined to the framework of Neoclassical Economics. There is a gap in our academic landscape as well as our public imagination.
The Institute for Transformation and Economy Studies closes this gap in Switzerland. Rooted in the Rethinking Economics movement, we train heterodox economists, make approaches such as Ecological, Feminist, Post-Keynesian, and Complexity Economics accessible, create spaces for collaboration and learning, and support organizations in their pursuit to scientifically explore systemic alternatives.

All the work we do is currently on a voluntary basis. Still, to keep things running we depend on a bit of infrastructure. To make our work accessible to everyone, regardless of their financial means, we thus depend on financial support. That’s why we really appreciate any kind of support, whether it’s financial contributions or access to workspaces in Zurich, Bern, or Geneva.
